Is the Arena and Underground worth it?
Visiting the Colosseum is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so make the best of it by exploring all its sections. The site, rich with centuries of history, was once the battleground for gladiators who entertained up to 80,000 spectators with their fights against each other, wild animals, and condemned criminals.
The Arena’s original wooden floor, once covered with sand to absorb blood and waste, has worn away over time, revealing the underground area.
This underground served as the backstage where gladiators and animals waited to enter the arena through trap doors.
Partially reconstructed, it allows visitors to experience its original form and view the intricate network of tunnels and chambers. These structures that were once functioning stand as testimony to Rome’s greatness.
What to see in the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
Located west of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum was once the city center, filled with government buildings, temples, and statues of prominent Roman leaders. Today, it is a rectangular expanse of ruins that offers a glimpse into the city’s storied past.
A testament to the cultural, political, and religious heart of ancient Rome, the Roman Forum attracts around 4.5 million visitors annually. Notable landmarks include the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Vesta, the Curia (Senate House), and the Arch of Septimius Severus.
Similarly, Palatine Hill, one of the most significant of Rome’s seven hills, deserves equal appreciation. Believed to be the site where Rome’s founders originated before establishing the city, Palatine Hill is home to several important landmarks, including the Stadium of Domitian, the House of Augustus, the House of Livia, and the Palatine Museum.
